Believe it or not, there are children right here in our own town of Olathe that are underprivileged and/or homeless. Many students receive free and reduced lunch at school and do not have books at home to read. After hearing from an Olathe school counselor about how some kids at her school do not have books at home and often don’t get their birthday celebrated due to various circumstances, KindCraft decided to take action!
Through the kindness and generosity of Grace Church in Overland Park, KindCraft was given 2000 new/gently used books to distribute to a group in need. Soooo, we decided to use this as an opportunity to not only fill a need in our very own community, but also to teach our own children to be compassionate to other kids who are just like them.
KindCraft was able to fill 450 birthday bags for the community at this awesome event. Thank you to all the people who donated supplies, came to fill bags, and helped facilitate this event. A special thank you to our drop off locations as well; Bringing Therapy Home, Olathe Christian Church, Cub Scout Den Pack 3281, Lenexa Methodist Church, Woodland Elementary and Gaby Lucas House of Dance. It truly does take an army!
In addition to helping those in need in Olathe, we were also able to help Metro Lutheran Ministry’s Family Empowerment Program. Each child in their program will now receive a birthday bag filled with books and goodies to celebrate their big day!
Metro Lutheran Ministry’s Family Empowerment Program strives to “provide stabilization for families with school-age children. The holistic approach helps families with services relating to housing, employment, financial management, public benefits access and other quality of life issues. The goal of this program is to provide the basics necessary to stabilize a family and keep their children enrolled in school, and to equip the family with the tools necessary to maintain their household, develop assets, and find a plan for future sustainability. Case-Management services include long term program participation, comprehensive coaching, and significant resources that are crucial for family stability and empowerment.” To learn more about Metro Lutheran Ministry check them out here: https://www.mlmkc.org/
